July 18/23 15:15 pm - Vingegaard Extends Lead after Stage 16 ITT

Posted by Editoress on 07/18/23

During today’s 24.4 km ITT, Jonas Vingegaard took a 10s gap to Tadej Pogacar and turned it into a 1:48m chasm. At the finish line Vingegaard had an unexpected margin of 1:38 to his rival in the mountainous time trial to Combloux, becoming the first ever Dane to win a Tour de France ITT. It is Jumbo-Visma’s first stage win this year.

Rémi Cavagna First of the ITT Specialists on the Road
Michael Morkov (Soudal Quick-Step) was the first rider off the starting ramp for the 24.4 km. There was one non-starter among the 157 riders on the ITT entry list: Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar). Dries Devenyns (Soudal-Quick Step), the oldest participant of this Tour de France who will turn 40 on the eve of the grand finale in Paris, was first to take the hot seat as he set the best time of the first twenty riders in action. He was ousted by Nikias Arndt (Bahrain Victorious) before Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) took over. But it was ITT French champion Rémi Cavagna (Soudal-Quick Step) who set a reference for the specialists in 35:42 with an average speed of 37.647km/h. .

Belgian ITT Champion Ousts French Champion from the Hot Seat
Cavagna remained on the hot seat for two hours and twelve minutes. A bike change didn’t help Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) to change the situation after losing time to the Frenchman by the bottom of the climb after setting the best time (provisionally) at check point 1. But Belgian ITT national champion Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) bettered him as he opted for the tactic to stay on his TT bike for the entire 24.4 km. He rode 35 seconds faster than Cavagna from the bottom of the Domancy climb until the finish line to set a new best time that would hold until Pogacar and Vingegaard.

Vingegaard Ahead Through All Checkpoints
In the duel for the Maillot Jaune, Vingegaard stamped his superiority from the start riding the first 7km 16s faster than Pogacar. He looked to be taking more risks in the curves going downhill. At the bottom of the climb, where Pogacar got a new bike (which took 12s), the Dane extended his advantage to 31s. At the top of the climb, still on a TT bike, he doubled it up to 1:05 and completed the course with the enormous advantage of 1:38. Pogacar posted the second best time of the day with van Aert rounding out the stage podium and Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) taking a worthy fourth place. Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) managed to overtake Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers) in third place overall while Felix Gall (AG2R Citroen Team) made it back into the top 10 at the expense of Guillaume Martin (Cofidis).

Top Canadian was Hugo Houle (Israel - Premier Tech) in 39th at 5:28 back. Mike Woods (Israel - Premier Tech) remains top Canadian in the overall, 38th at 1:55:29 back.
